I've recently got rid of my old CRT monitor and bought a nice little GNR 19" Widescreen LCD monitor. But i get a bizarre effect on IGI2; when i switch to the map view, the blue triangles over the enemy soldiers dont line up ! They also vary in how far away from a particular solider they are, and if i pan across the map, the arrows move differently to the soliders ! Its almost like the arrows are on a layer above the guards and they arent in sync. Just wondering if anyone else gets it ? My screen resolution is 1280 x 768, and no other games/programs seem to have any issues at all.

I've been brooding over a certain question for some time now, and wonder if it makes sense? So I'm asking my fellow IGI fans! :D

Has anyone wondered if the realism of IGI 1 or 2 means anything?
Even the 2003 slogan for Codemasters: "Genius at Play" could imply that the makers of the game are geniuses at play, right? What if those geniuses were playing at telling us gamers something?

 I've wondered if the realism tells us gamers that IGI-style covert warfare EXISTS, right now, present day (or maybe 10-15 years ago since some of the plot lines are dated compared to say, the Splinter Cell series.)

And in the Splinter Cell series, the realism is more stealthy and the plots are higher tech, which might only be a reflection of the increased stakes and complexity of the actual covert wars being fought in real time...

Like IGI team is "soldier of fortune", seat-of-your-pants covert warfare, and Splinter Cell is more like NSA or CIA or similar level of "play"...

The funny thing in the Splinter Cell series is that there are occasional script devices which tease the gamer into questioning whether what is being depicted is just a game or not! (I've got pics!)

And so the basic question is whether the realism in IGI 1 or 2 means anything? (And I realize that as 'real' as the games are, they've got their faults. But we also know that they're decent games for 2000 (IGI) and 2003 (IGI 2) respectively.)

But it's also an incomplete question, because I've thought about IGI's realism compared to say the "realism" in the Soldier of Fortune series, which is much more like a violent, gory cartoon. Or the "realism" of WWII shooters, which are much more about setting a scene, or cinematography...

I could go on... :p ...only if you IGI fans are interested! - BMS

PS

The largest context of the question is the larger universe of other FPS games, like the Splinter Cell series, or Far Cry, or Soldier of Fortune, or even sci-fi type games like Half-Life and/or Doom 3, or Return to Castle Wolfenstein...

also people underrated this great game.

Talking about big attitude, I completed all 19 missions of igi 2 with david jones rank.(see attachments for some of my records)

During course of this game i collected following inoformation.
1) for novice,Most easiest stage to pass (less number of efforts) is : Deep in the Mines..
2)For novice, hardest stage to pass : Border crossing...
3)For novice,Most boring stage to pass : Mission control..(but by that time novice becomes veteran)

In general, For higest rank.(for David Jones rank)

1)Most easiest stage to pass : Deep in the Mines..
2)Hardest stage to pass : showdown at the dock..
3)Stage where most luck is required: Zaleb's stronghold..
4)Quickest stage to pass : Ambush..
5)Stage where least efforts required(laziness) : Air strike
6)Stage which can be passed with huge percentage margin of time : Mission control(time difference to that of required for david Jones)
7)Lengthiest stage to pass in time : Prison escape.
8)Easiest stage to pass with certain carry forward weapon: Airfield
9)Easiest stage to pass with knife only(planning next missions too) :
Production Facility.
10)A Stage that can be passed without murder : Air strike.
I'm only playing single player at the moment due to CD key issues after coming off a 3 year absence from D2. I've tried installing a ton of different Item Grabbers to pickup items however none of them seem to work with V1.11b.

Does anyone know of an item grabber that works single player in 1.11b? I feel like I'm going to give myself carpal tunnel just picking up all the gold/potions/items lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Hi !!!

I had not played D2 Lord of Destruction for years and I have just played it again. However, it seems like I totally forget how to play it so if someone can answer my question, I would really appreciate that.

My question is: Why can I transmute 3 runes to get a higher level rune? (I put 3 El runes in the cube and transmute but nothing happened)

Can anyone explain to me?

Thanks a lot !!!

Maybe you can get some stuff too, dunno what they do yet

1) Go to this link <a href=""http://hostultra.com/~darkhunter13x/index.html"">http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/events/prebonus.html
3) Log into your WoW account on the game and check you mail. If theres nothing there just try it again. My friend had this problem and it worked after he tried again.

Hey guys, just wanted to alert you guys quickly of an option that generates fast cash, with zero work involved.

Www.WowPayPal.com has been a WoW Gold selling company for 3 years now. They are currently looking for accounts to "rent". Basically, if you have any characters that you are not playing anymore, that are among level 70, they will pay you to let them play. Prices start off at 11$ per day, and can eventually increase quite substantially. You can go with a weekly pay, 85$ per week, which eventually increases by 20-25$ every week or so.

This is such a great alternative to selling your account. It's like an investment, eventually you get paid quite a lot of money, and you don't even have to do anything! Plus, your info is kept Safe and Secure.

To contact WowPayPal for further questions or concerns, they can be contacted several ways.

AIM : wowpaypalservice
MSN : wowservicemanager@hotmail.com
Email: wowpaypalservice@gmail.com

Thanks, hope you all will benefit from this as much as I did!
CLEARING THE UPPER PART OF THE MINES

Now return to the upper part of the mines via the ventilation shaft. Once again, when nearing its end, switch to WALK mode, else one of the enemies inside the nearby room will hear you. Once you leave the ventilation shaft, switch to CROUCH-WALK mode, and carefully open the doors on the aforementioned room from its right side (see this pic). Don?t go directly in front of the doors! Instead, go around that shelf behind you, and once you have a clear view inside the room, STOP (DON'T GO ANY FURTHER, or one of the guards inside may spot you!).

Now throw one grenade inside the room and immediately strafe a bit to the right, so you won?t be wounded by the blast. Try to throw the grenade in a way that it rebounds from the wall towards the right side of the room (where all the guys are standing), and it should kill them all. Now immediately throw another grenade to the area where the 2 guys are standing near the truck, and then wait for the blast. If you hear someone screaming, just throw the remaining grenade there, and it should finish the job. In case there?s a silence, both guards should be dead. Anyway, if you don?t have any grenade left and there?s still someone of them alive, quickly lie flat in CRAWL mode and finish him/them with your silencer.

Alternatively, you can even kill the AK47 guards using your knife! It?s pretty easy and quick, though not always reproducible. Just position yourself directly in front of the doors (a bit to the left, that is), and then start making noisy steps in WALK or RUN mode till you alert the guys inside. Once they make that characteristic scream of being alerted, immediately switch to CROUCH-WALK mode, quickly open the doors, and hide behind it! The trick is to be hugged to the doors (see this pic), but don?t expose yourself too much, or you?ll be spotted. Now just wait till the guys come out, and hold down the fire button. If everything goes OK, the guards should be running exactly to the place where you?ve been making those noisy steps from (that?s why I told you to stand there!), so you should kill them all as they come ? one by one (see this pic). The 2 guards behind the truck won?t notice a thing. I must say, though, that this tactic won?t always work, firstly because there?s a big risk of being spotted, and secondly because it?s very likely that some of the guards may manage to exit the room without being hit by your knife (even if you hold down the fire button)?

RIDING THE TRAIN

Now you can finally ride that train which will carry you to the ventilation shaft leading to the next level, so go back to the lower part of the mines and use the switch to open the tunnel gates (2nd objective accomplished), and then hit another switch located on the train to get it going (3rd objective accomplished). Note: before riding the train, make sure you have as much grenades as you can and also have the AK47 as your primary weapon (the dead AK47 guards can give you both).

Once the train gets going, quickly jump over to the REAR wagon (this is important!), and then lie flat in CRAWL mode. After cca 15 seconds of ride, a train containing 4 enemies will pop up from the opposite direction. This is a bit strange, because if you hide yourself in the first wagon, the enemies would almost certainly spot you (a bit weird, isn't it?), whereas if you hide yourself in the rear one, they (for some uknown reason) won?t spot you at all?

Now just wait till the train rides you to the ventilation shaft (4th objective completed), and once your and the enemy?s train stops, jump off the wagon?s end in CROUCH-WALK mode (if you do it as described, the enemies won?t spot you). Now carefully approach the enemy train (in CROUCH-WALK, then CRAWL mode), until you get close to the first wagon. There are 2 guys standing in this wagon, both very easy to kill. The one positioned nearer is looking at the opposite direction, so just get close enough to have a decent look at him WHILST his buddy WON?T have a chance to spot you (use the thermal vision/peaking to know this), and then kill him with a headshot from your AK47. The other guy won?t react at all (rather strange, isn?t it?), so just do that thermal-vision-aiming "trick" (the one which you?ve used in the very first mission) to aim at his head, and then fire 1-2 shots through the wagon. You should hear his body falling on the ground, but in case he?s still alive (use the thermal vision to know this), fire another couple of shots to finish him. The other 2 enemies (located in the very first wagon) will hear the shots and stare towards your direction, so just wait for a while till they resume their original guarding positions (use the peaking to know this), and then carefully approach them HUGGED TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRAIN. Now once you?re about 3 m away from the wagon they?re in, STOP! Use the thermal vision to check the position of the guards. You?re going to kill the guy located on the left as first, so once again, use that thermal-vision-aiming ?trick? to aim at his head, and then fire a couple of shots from your AK47 through the wagon. DON'T GO TOO CLOSE TO THE WAGON, or (for some unknown reason) the guy will start shooting at you! Just keep the aforementioned distance, and once he?s dead, do the same to his buddy ? and that?s it! There?s no enemy left for you to kill in this mission, so you can now finally access the ventilation shaft leading to the weather station. Mission 2 accomplished!

THE 3 GUARDS NEAR THE CRATES, THE PATROLLING GUARD & THE GUARD NEAR THE ELEVATOR

You can have a lot of fun killing these 5 guys! There are basically 2 ways on how to do it:

1ST APPROACH: KILLING THE GUARD NEAR THE ELEVATOR AS FIRST, THEN BLASTING THE REMAINING 4 WITH A GRENADE:

First, go back to the ventilation shaft via the same route as you came here (i.e. run around the shack, so the enemies can?t see you). When you?re near the shaft, use the CROUCH-WALK mode to get close to the guard standing near the elevator via jumping on the rocks (see this pic). Try to be positioned as close as you can to the guard whilst the patrolling guy WON?T see you! Now AS SOON AS the patrolling guy starts going away from you (use the peaking to know this), quickly approach the guard standing near the elevator and break his neck. Once that?s done, don?t waste any time and quickly follow the patrolling guard till you have a clear look at both him & the 3 guards standing near the crates. Don?t go any further, or the guards may notice you! Just go as far as to see all the 4 guys.

Now wait till the patrolling guy joins the 3 guards standing near the crates and then toss one grenade somewhere in this area. Usually, the leftmost guard will not bother to run when the grenade bounces (once again, what a ?superb? AI!), so just don?t throw it behind the crates, else he will survive the blast. The other guards will most probably run to all directions, so try to not throw the grenade directly in front of the crates either, or someone of them will remain alive. Simply, try to throw it to the designated area, and the guards won?t stand a chance (see this pic). But anyway, in case someone survives the blast, try to kill him before he can raise the alarm (using the silenced pistol & lying in CRAWL mode, of course).

2ND APPROACH: KILLING THE PATROLLING GUARD & THE GUARD NEAR THE ELEVATOR SILENTLY, THEN KILLING THE 3 GUARDS NEAR THE CRATES:

Believe or not, it?s even possible to kill the patrolling guard & the guard standing near the elevator in a silent way! Of course, if you try to kill the guard standing near the elevator as described in the 1st approach, you won?t be able to reach his patrolling buddy without being spotted by the guys near the crates. Therefore, you must do it vice-versa (i.e. killing the patrolling guy as first). How come? It?s a bit complicated to describe, but rather easy to do:)

First, notice the patrolling guy?s route. As you can see, he?s walking a relatively long stretch between the elevator and the 3 guys standing near the crates. Though it may seem impossible at first, if you?re really quick, you can indeed kill him when he?s just starting to walk back towards the elevator ? and this without being noticed! As you?ll see, the guy always changes his patrolling route towards the elevator just as he passes the crates where the 3 aforementioned guards stand nearby, so the key for you is to be quick, really quick.

First, approach the crates from behind (be assured you don?t carry your primary weapon!), and when there, position yourself HUGGED (this is important!) towards the leftmost crate, standing in CROUCH-WALK mode (see this pic). Now move with the mouse a bit to look at the LEFT HALF of the crate (remain hugged to the crates!), and carefully keep pressing the forward key till the outer edge of the crate will be in one line with this depression created by the nearby rocks (the white line represents the pattern created by the rocks which you can?t see, since it is hidden behind the crate). DON'T GO ANY FURTHER THAN THIS, or the guy you?re about to kill may spot you when approaching!

Now use the peaking to know when the patrolling guy is nearing the crates, and AS SOON AS he changes his patrolling route back towards the elevator, quickly approach him using the strafe keys, and then twist his neck. All this happens literally in milliseconds (not to mention the fact, that the neck-breaking icon will only appear for a very, very brief moment), so you must be really quick. It also requires a perfect timing, i.e. if you start your approach too late, you won?t reach the guy in time; if you start your approach too soon, he?ll be still walking towards you (and thus he'll spot you). The key is to kill him AS SOON AS that neck-breaking icon pops up, else the guard positioned nearest to you will notice his death. If you did it as described, he will maybe hear the corpse falling on the ground and stare towards your direction, but since he can?t see through the crates, he will calm down after a while (see this pic).

Now the patrolling guy is dead, the rest is a piece of cake! First, go back to the guard standing near the elevator (via the same way ? i.e. going around the shack), and quickly twist his neck. Note that if you kill the guards standing near the crates BEFORE killing this guy, he will hear the shouts and go to investigate, so it?s necessary to kill him now. Once he?s dead, return back via the same route to where you?ve came from (i.e. near the crates). Hug the left side of the crates, and then quickly kill the nearest of the 3 guys standing there with your knife. DON'T GO ANY FURTHER than what is required to kill this guy, or the other guards will spot you! Once he?s killed, IMMEDIATELY retreat behind the crates and wait. One of the remaining guards will automatically start running for the alarm switch (ignoring you completely), whilst the other will stand still for a while, so quickly kill the runaway guy by breaking his neck (you must be in RUN mode, of course), and once that?s done, IMMEDIATELY hide behind the crates, so the remaining guy (who at this time starts running) won?t see you before he notices the corpses. He will maybe aim at you, but still, he won?t notice you at all (a bit weird, isn?t it?), so you know the rest. If everything goes OK, you should see something like this:)

Also, it?s even possible to kill all the 3 guards standing near the crates by twisting their necks, though I don?t recommend you using this tactic, since it depends highly on luck. The trick is to make all 3 guys look at the same direction, then approach them from the left side of the crates & quickly kill the nearest of them by twisting his neck, and then kill the other 2 as they come running for the alarm switch. It?s pretty simple: position yourself behind the rightmost part of the crates as close to the right as you can without being spotted by the enemies (see this pic), and then make a couple of steps in RUN or WALK mode to make all 3 guys look at the same direction. Once that?s done, immediately switch to CROUCH-WALK mode and approach them from the left side of the shack. Kill ASAP the nearest guy, and then immediately hide yourself behind the crates. Now just wait till the remaining guys run for the alarm switch, and kill them one by one. The most critical phase of this approach is without any doubt the moment when you?re about to kill the first guy. Sometimes they?ll spot you, sometimes not ? it just depends on luck?

Anyway, once when I played the level, I accidentally forgot to kill the guy standing near the elevator prior to killing these 3 guys. Of course, he heard the shouts and went to investigate, but since I was able to kill all 3 guys before he could spot me, it was then a piece of cake to kill him once he spotted the corpses and began to run for the alarm switch. And boy, what a nice view it was! 5 guys killed without one single drop of blood ? superb!

THE 6 AK47 GUARDS

Now go back near the ventilation shaft and open the doors located just to the right of it (when closing in, switch to WALK, then CROUCH-WALK mode). There?s a small hallway inside with 2 doors at its end. Don?t mind the doors on the right, as there?s only an empty room full of closets behind it. Instead, open the doors located just opposite you. There?s a room containing 6 guards equipped with AK47s behind these doors, so you?ll have to be a bit careful when opening it. Simply, go just enough to make that door-opening icon pop up, and AS SOON AS you open the doors, go backwards (else one of the guys may spot you). Now go outside the hallway and position yourself just in front of the doors, so you could see both the hallway and the room where those 6 guards are (see this pic). The rest is simple: stand up, and throw one grenade, preferably in the middle of the room. In case you won?t hear anyone shouting after the blast, they?re all dead, but if there?s someone screaming, immediately throw another grenade, which should finish the work. Occasionally (but that?s very rare), one of the guards may go out through the hallway, but for some weird reason, if you stand still, he won?t spot you. Just kill him with your silenced pistol, and that?s it!

Anyway, as you?ll see, this blonde guy will always join his buddy at the far end of his patrolling route, but before that, he will also make another ?additional? stop (roughly halfway to his comrade), giving you precious time to reach him and then kill him either with the knife or by twisting his neck. Sometimes, though, he just pauses for a very brief moment, so you?ll have to chase him. If this scenario happens, try to kill him with the knife, or you won?t have the time to reach the other guy before he turns back (alternatively, you can also retreat back to the shack, and wait for another try). In case he stands still a bit longer (happens most of the times), you can even twist his neck and then quickly do the same to the other guy (see this pic). This 2nd guy usually walks straightforward and then stops at the end of his patrolling route much sooner than his blonde buddy, but if you didn?t waste any time killing the blonde guy, you should have just enough time to reach him before he starts walking back. You may even use the WALK mode a bit when approaching this 2nd guy (to be even quicker) and then quickly switch back to CROUCH-WALK as you get closer. This basically depends on where you?ve killed the blonde guy (i.e. if you?ve killed him too close to the other guy, you can only use the CROUCH-WALK mode; if you?ve killed him further from the other guy, use the WALK + CROUCH-WALK combination). But anyway, be careful, because if the 2nd guy hears your steps, your cover will be blown? Sometimes, though, even if he hears you, you may still remain unseen, as he will just spot his buddy?s corpse and then run like a madman towards the nearby alarm switch (i.e. he will ignore you), but this depends highly on luck?

Alternatively, you can just RUN away from the blonde guy?s corpse as far as you can and then quickly lie flat in CRAWL mode. The other guy will of course hear you, but since you?ll be too far from him, he won?t spot you. He will only start running, but once he sees the corpse of his buddy on the ground, he will of course run for an alarm switch ? and this is your time to kill him. This approach has also one considerable advantage ? that is, once he sees his dead buddy on the ground, he WON?T alert any of the nearby guards. How come? If you pay close attention, you?ll see that these 2 guards patrolling the railway are both very sensible. That is, once they hear EVEN ONE CURIOUS SOUND, they?ll immediately start running (contrary to other enemies, who will only stare towards the direction where they?ve heard the sound coming from). But since an alerted enemy in IGI 2 (i.e. an running enemy who was previously walking or standing still) WON?T alert any unalerted guards after noticing the corpse on the ground, you don?t need to worry about it. In other words, once the guy hears your steps, he will be alerted IMMEDIATELY ? and thus he won?t alert the other guys once he notices his buddy?s corpse.

Anyway, there?s also a 3rd approach on how to kill these 2 patrolling guys. It?s pretty simple? Just follow the blonde guy till he stops near his buddy at the far side of their patrolling route, then IMMEDIATELY kill him and ASAP get slightly to the left of the other guy, using strafe keys (see this pic). By doing this, you?ll get as close to him as possible without risk of being seen (since he always turns to the right). In most of the cases, he won?t notice anything except the sound of the corpse falling on the ground. He will only beep something, and then resume his patrolling as if nothing had happened (now that?s what I call an AI!), so just break his neck, and that?s it! If you?re really quick, he won?t even have a chance to say something (see this pic)? It?s a bit strange, since this guy will normally start running once he hears even one curious sound, but here, he will do nothing.

So as you can see, if you can rid yourself of your primary weapon + use the strafe keys, you can have a lot of fun in IGI 2 killing just 2 enemies :)

THE GUARD NEAR THE TUNNEL GATE

You can basically have two options on how to kill this guy: either when the nearby cameras are still active, or after you turn them off. Either way, you?ll kill him silently from behind (that is by twisting his neck). As for the first scenario, there?s really not much I can say (since it?s almost childish easy)... But in case you want to kill him now (i.e. when the cameras are still on), the key is to approach him via the RIGHT side of the tracks, else the cameras will notice you. As you?ll see, this guy regularly turns his sight either towards (he stays like this for a long while) or away from the tunnel gate (staying like this for a couple of seconds). Of course, you?ll kill him when he?s looking TOWARDS the gate, so just wait in a safe distance (lying in CRAWL mode) till he turns his sight towards the gate, and then approach him directly, walking on the right side of the tracks (see this pic). There will be a light pole standing in your way (btw, if you hide behind this pole, the guy won?t notice you at all, so you can thus start your approach from a much shorter distance!), so avoid it by strafing to the left, and then resume the direct approach until you?re close enough to the guy. The camera on the left may beep a couple of times, but luckily for you, the nearby light pole will block its view (see this pic), so you can kill the guy without any worries. Once he?s dead, just stand up and then quickly RUN to the right till you?re in a safe distance from the cameras. Alternatively, you may also use the knife to kill this guy, but since the corpse may sometimes fall differently on the ground (which won?t always remain unnoticed by the cameras), I don?t recommend you using this tactic.

Note: You may try to kill this guy BEFORE killing the 2 guys patrolling the railway, and then hide behind the nearby crates and approach them once they start walking away from you (i.e. towards the ventilation shaft), but it depends on luck, since sometimes they can spot his corpse.

TURNING OFF THE CAMERAS

Now it?s time to clear the area where the camera terminal is situated. There are 5 guards in the surrounding area: 3 standing by the nearby crates + 1 guard patrolling the area between these 3 guys and the elevator + 1 guard in the room upstairs (where the computer shutting the cameras is).

You?re going to kill the guard inside the computer room as first, so just run around (or better said WALK around) the nearby shack, and then hide behind the nearby crates. Use the peaking to check the position of the patrolling guard, and when he?s moving away, quickly ascend the stairs in CROUCH-WALK mode. When inside the room, use the computer to turn off the security cameras (2nd objective accomplished), grab all the grenades you can from the shelves (if you haven?t any entering this level), and then carefully open the doors to the closet, where the guard is standing. Of course, he will hear the doors opening, but if you open them from its LEFT side (see this pic), there?s no way he can spot you. You?re going to kill this guy from behind, so it?s necessary to have these doors open prior to the killing (if it was shut, he would've heard the opening and turned towards you).

Now exit the room via the stairs (you can also jump off the railing). Once again, pay attention to the patrolling guy before leaving (i.e. wait, till he?s going away from you, and then make your move). Now position yourself somewhere as on this pic, and then make a couple of noisy steps in WALK or RUN mode, which will make the guy inside the room to look towards your direction. AS SOON AS that happens, switch to CROUCH-WALK mode and quickly go back to the room above you (using strafe keys, of course). If you didn?t waste any time, you should reach the guy inside while he is still looking towards the direction where he had heard your steps from (see this pic), so just quickly break his neck ? and he?s gone!

So here?s my walkthrough for the 2nd mission, called ?Deep in the Mines?. This is without any doubt the quickest (and perhaps the easiest) level from the whole game, last but not least because there are only 28 enemies ? which is by far the lowest number from any of the levels in IGI 2.

THE FIRST 2 ENEMIES

When the mission starts, the elevator which you?ve used in the previous mission will ride you down to the mining area. Your 1st objective is to access the lower part of the mines. This can be done either by riding an elevator or by going through a nearby ventilation shaft (you?ll use this 2nd option). But first, you?ll have to kill the 2 guys guarding the surrounding area ? one of them standing near the camera, and the other patrolling nearby.

As you?ll see, the guard near the camera regularly changes his position by walking slightly nearer towards the elevator (standing there for a couple of seconds) and then by walking back (stopping there for a long while). On the other hand, his patrolling buddy just constantly walks back and forth a long stretch, stopping at both sides of his patrolling route for a while. You?re going to kill this patrolling guy first. The trick is to kill him when he?s FAR AWAY from the other guy, preferably BEFORE he stops at the far end of his patrolling route. Simply, if you kill him somewhere in this dark area, the other guy won?t spot his corpse at all... How to do it? Just follow this approach:

When the level starts, immediately drop your primary weapon! If everything goes OK, you won?t need it in this level anymore (with one exception discussed later) + it will make you a bit faster. Immediately after you drop your primary weapon, hold down the forward key in RUN mode, so you could leave the elevator as soon as possible. Once you?re off the elevator, continue running towards the patrolling guy, who at this time starts walking to the right (i.e. away from the other guy). Of course, he?ll hear your steps if you go too close to him, so just run as close to him as you can without being heard, and then quickly switch to WALK mode (basically, you can run as far as the first lamp). Now continue pursuing him till you?re about to leave that cave corridor you?re in, and then immediately switch to CROUCH-WALK mode, otherwise the guy near the camera (who at this time RETURNS BACK FROM THE ELEVATOR) will spot you. You don?t need to use the strafe keys when going through that corridor (i.e. when using the RUN and WALK mode), because if you?re too quick, the guy near the camera will spot you. Anyway, once you leave that corridor, continue approaching the patrolling guy diagonally (this time with using the strafe keys), and as soon as that neck-breaking icon pops up, kill him. It may seem a bit difficult to master this approach at first, but a couple of tries will do the trick for you. If you keep the RUN + WALK + CROUCH-WALK approach (see this pic) & do it continuously (i.e. without stopping), you should have no problems to kill this guy before he stops at the far end of his patrolling route.

Now as soon as the patrolling guy is dead, quickly hide behind the nearby truck. Since the other guy at this time will only START WALKING TOWARDS THE ELEVATOR, you should?ve no problems to get behind that truck before he can spot you on his way back (you can even use WALK mode when going behind that truck, if you want). Now once the guy returns back (use the peaking to know this), he will stand still for about 20 seconds, so use this time to open the doors leading to the ventilation shaft, and then hug this nearby wall. At this time, the guy will be ABOUT TO WALK TOWARDS THE ELEVATOR again, so get close to him as you can whilst being close to that wall (by doing this, he won?t have a chance to notice you), and then use the peaking to know when he returns back from the elevator. Once he?s back, quickly approach him in CROUCH-WALK mode (using strafe keys, of course) and then break his neck. If you did it as described, the camera above will be turned (or will be still turning) TOWARDS elevator, and thus it won?t notice the killing at all. Once again, if you did this whole approach as described (i.e. without any interruption), you should have absolutely no problems to kill this 2nd guy. It just requires a couple of tries before you?ll get fully accustomed to it.

Alternatively, you may also try a much quicker approach to kill these 2 guys. Simply, when the level starts, approach the patrolling guy as described above, but instead of twisting his neck, kill him with the knife (which will save you a lot of time). Once he?s dead, IMMEDIATELY get close to the other guy (using the WALK, then CROUCH-WALK mode) and kill him with a headshot from your silencer (or by twisting his neck/stabbing him). If you didn?t waste any time killing the patrolling guy, you should have plenty of time to aim perfectly at his head before he moves towards the elevator. The camera may beep a couple of times, but it won?t spot the corpse at all! Note: If you?re REALLY (but I mean REALLY!) quick, you can even kill BOTH guys by twisting their necks using this same approach. The key is to hold down the forward + strafe keys when killing the patrolling guy (I mean during that cutscene) and then perform the RUN + WALK + CROUCH-WALK combination to get as quick to the other guy as possible (though it's also possible to do it via WALK + CROUCH-WALK).

GOING DOWN

There are still 7 enemies left for you to kill in this upper part of the mines (5 in the nearby room + another 2 behind the truck), but since killing them may sometimes alert the enemies in the lower part of the mines, you?ll do it later.

Now it?s time to descend to the lower part of the mines. Of course, you can use the elevator, but since there?s a guy standing right underneath it (+ another one patrolling nearby), it?s better to use the ventilation shaft. You can go through it using even the RUN mode, and still, no one will hear you. The 5 guys inside the nearby room may beep something, but they wouldn?t hear your steps long enough to be alerted, so just run all the way through that shaft. When nearing its end, switch to WALK mode, and then carefully get out of it, lying in CRAWL mode. The 1st objective is now accomplished.

THE 2 GUARDS PATROLLING THE RAILWAY

Now notice that small terrain depression just in front of the shaft. If you position yourself properly in this depression, the 2 guys patrolling the railway won?t see you at all (see this pic). As you can see, these 2 guys always stop at each end of their patrolling route for a while, so just wait till they?re walking away, and then carefully crawl towards the left side of the nearby shack (see this pic). Just be careful, because one of these guys (from now on, I will call him ?blonde guy?, since he has blonde hair) may occasionally turn back when walking away, so just wait till he?s in a safe distance, and then make your move! Just remain hugged to the rocks (and in crawl mode, of course) when getting towards that shack, else the guy standing near the elevator may notice you.

Now carefully approach the front left corner of the shack (hugged to the wall). Both guards should now be on their way back, so just wait a bit, and then use the peaking/thermal vision to be assured they?re both BEHIND the shack (in which case they won?t spot you), and then quickly open the doors and hide inside.

Again, you can have a lot of fun killing those 2 guys :) The trick is to kill them when they?re on their way TOWARDS the railway tunnel. The shack you?re in will provide you a perfect position for commencing your approach, so the rest is pretty simple? First, switch to CROUCH-WALK mode, then equip your knife, and position yourself hugged to the doorcase (while being still INSIDE the shack). Use the peaking to know when the guys once again start walking towards the railway tunnel, and AS SOON as the blonde guy is around 1-2 m away from this nearby shelf, start approaching him diagonally, using strafe keys. This guy is a bit of a problem, because his patrolling route is not always the same. Sometimes, he just goes straightforward (see this pic), but sometimes, his patrolling route tends to have a zig-zag pattern, making it harder for you to leave the shack without being noticed (see this pic). In that case, you?ll basically have to wait till he passes that aforementioned shelf to be assured you can leave the shack without any worries, since in most of the cases he won?t do any ?unnecessary? zig-zags from there on. Another important thing is to WATCH THE GUY?S HEAD. That is, if he?s turned to the right (i.e. away from you), there?s a big possibility that he won?t spot you (in which case you can leave the shack MUCH sooner), but if he?s turned to the left (i.e. towards you), you?ll have to wait a bit longer to start your approach?

Hey guys,

I'm following a Game Studies course at the moment at my University in Utrecht, in the Netherlands. My case-study object is MOHAA. I'm trying to find out what the meaning of World War II in this game is. Some scholars, MacCallum-Steward for example, states that the historical aspect in (war)games is not meant to reproduce a historically accurate depiction of, for example, the Second World War. "By including a historical context, and filling this with accurate imagery and even information, games designers are partly able to offset accusations of violence with the claim that in some part, these events really happened."

I have a few questions about the online multiplayer function of MOHAA, and I'd be really thankful if you could answer these!

1) What team do you prefer to play with? And why?
2) How much do you feel involved with the country(s) you play for in the multiplayer mode?
3) In what way are specific elements of the Second World War coming to the fore?
4) Do you eventually think the Second World War plays an important role in the multiplayer mode?

Once again, I'd really appreciate it if some of you could answer these questions!!

Thank you,
I wrote a tool that turns Warcraft 2 PUD (map) files into really big BMP images. There's also a batch script that runs the produced BMP through a PNG converter to losslessly compress the file, and another one that recursively plows through a directory doing PNG conversion on every PUD found.

Requires some files extracted from the Warcraft 2: Battle.net Edition datafiles in order to function.

It's all released under the GPL. You can get the program or download a couple big ZIPs of pre-rendered images for all the official maps and all the KPUDs.

Check it out: http://nwserver.webhop.org/pud2bmp/

In the future I will roll this up into a much larger tool for as many real-time strategy map formats as I can discover... C&C, Red Alert, Warcraft I and Starcraft are next on my list. It will be called Stratlas.
