Just done this David Jones, 100%, 100% in 5:53 !

I actually think the first part of the level is a piece of piss; its picking off the guards after the restart that causes the problem. But i have found out how to nearly always obtain a second grenade; here's how - at the very start of the level, hit Esc to finsh the cut-scene quickly and switch to your secondary SMG in 1-shot mode. Crouch down and move to your right hard against the crate so you can see the rear guard walking away and the the front guard obscured by the crates. In the first few secs of the level; the rear guard pauses for a few secs just before continuing (if you dont finish the cut-scene quick enough, sometimes he wont stop); if you can kill him cleanly with a single SMG head-shot; the other guards grouped inside will not be disturbed (the nearest might turn) - the front guard however will notice and make a run for the alarm button near where you are. Switch to knife and go back behind the crates keeping close to the left hand edge and facing the buddha statue; the front guard will race past in front of you and go for the alarm; you have plenty of time to stab him before he completes the alarm activation - he wont see you - and nearly everytime, if you stab him with your knife he drops a grenade ! You can use the SMG on him, but in my experience the reverse happens - he almost always never drops one ! Now in walk mode leave the crates, drop to crouch by the first corner where the dead gaurd is so the group inside dont hear you, then once past the crates you can detour inside and in walk mode run right round to the first objective, and if you do this at optimum you can reach it as the camera is panning away and do it straight away. Then still in walk mode exit right and approach the stairs; the far camera will probably notice you; but if you keep the right hand post at the top of the stairs in between you and the camera, you can swing out left at the last minute and go down the stairs, switching to crouch mode after a few steps and you will avoid the camera easily ...

The second grenade can be thrown at the general atop the balcony by being in crouch mode and just sticking yourself out from the glass panel (you dont seem to get spotted) - wait 6 clicks before you release at a point just above the generals head. Sometimes you get lucky and kill the first guard by the glass door as well. My problem is that the last group of guards sometimes stand by the door and the wrong one opens and i cant shoot them .. sometimes they even seem to walk through the wrong door !

Haha, since doing all the levels again, its nice to be able to play this level as in my previous saves it had become corrupted and i couldnt play it (a common bug i understand)

Just achieved David Jones in 8:11, 100% Accuracy & Helath ! This is what i did:

At the start of the level, run to your left a little and switch to crawl and using the Sniper, take out the far pair of temple guards on the uppermost level. Then switch to area 3 and kill first the nearside patrolling RPG guy on the walkway (who should be near the corner or thereabouts), then the other RPG guy on the same walkway who is in the distance (past the balcony with the two guards in it) obscured by trees (but you can just see him). Now go to the second area and snipe the three guys on the far side (two in the tent, one outside on the farside). Be careful here as they will try to activate the alarm button just outside their tent). Reload. Now to area 1, firstly snipe the farside RPG guy on the walkway near the front tower, then on the same walkway snipe the nearside RPG guy near the wall between areas 1 and 2. Now here is an important bit; you will have a quick second to see the guard run to activate the alarm in the first area; you should see his head show up on the wall near the RPG guy you just shot - kill him ! Also kill the guard on the balcony above the doors between areas 1 and 2. Now pan right to area 2 and you should see the three guards that have come out of the mobile; snipe them, but dont kill the stationary guard outside the mobile. Now reload and wait; keep your eyes in the second area; shortly one of the guards will try to activate the alarm in the second area just outside the mobile; snipe him. Also, the guy in the first area in one of the buildings will be outside somewhere; he usually runs into area 2 - so you have four loose guards to deal with in total. Once done; get up and run further left till the rock areay turns to green - switch to crawl again and zoom in on the door between areas 2 and 3 where the three guards stand - you should be able to snipe the first and second guys through the wall, but the third guy is too far back - wait till he runs to open the doors then snipe him. You have now killed all the gaurds in areas 1 and 2 SAVE the guy in area 1 who patrols the centre area. Now snipe the guys in the front towers; one shot should be able to kill each pair if you aim right. Now the tricky bit; you should be able to see a bit of the nearer sniper guy on the front balcony; if not try, moving a little further left. When you can, snipe him, then pan across to the alarm button in area 1; the patrolling gaurd will make for the alarm; as before you have a second to take him out; if you can do it thats all the guards eliminated and the alarm has not sounded ! Now move forward til you can see the edge of the front balcony and the farside sniper guy and the guard who stands inbetween them; take the sniper guy first; then the guard.

Now toss your Sniper rifle and run all the way thru areas 1 and 2 to the gate to area 3 (Hint: as you go, run over some of the dead guards in your path and see if you can pick up a grenade). At gate 3, run inside and right; switch to crouch mode and go round the back of the building containing the terminal to turn of the security; as you pass round the far side; use the SMG in single shot mode to kill the guard inside with a headshot and use the posts to block the camera seeing you. Now avoiding the camera in walk mode get inside and do the objective. Then exit and turn right and right again so you are back on the far side where you were; switch to run mode and race back and along the area where you came in; run past the area 3 gate then run to the near corner of the other building with the next objective; switch to walk mode so the far guards dont see you, walk along the nearside then turn left and go through the door to complete the dish alignment objective. Exit in walk mode and keeping close to the building turn left and get thru the gate and ascend the mast. Again ,i walk mode, the nearby guards wont here you if you keep as far away from them as possible.

Slide down to the top of the platform. Switch to crawl mode and move off the platform so you fall onto the one below; do the same so you fall onto the walkway. Now in crouch mode move along the walkway away from the gaurds till you reach the corner; jump atop the wall (still crouched) and immediately switch to crawl mode. Do not go any further along the wall, simply move off it so you fall into the last area. The two guards standing close by will not notice you; simply crawl away til you are near the far wall, the get up and run round the white fence, then run through the gaps till you reach the temple proper; then run right and around til you reach the ramps; switch to crouch mode just before. Now pick off the two patrol guards in this area; you may only need to do one if the other guard is far off. You can also in crawl mode simply ascend the ramps without being seen, although its slower. Once on the top, run to the final objective (the doors)

If you have a grenade you've picked up, when you drop off the wall and move away from the guards; you can switch to crouch mode and throw a grenade over their heads (do it so it goes as far possible); this is useful to divert all the guards to the explosion; so when you run round to the ramps, if you threw the grenade far enough; the two patrolling guards wont be there, but investigating the explosion, so you can run all the way to the top ...

Not that big of a deal... Once you find the right approach, it's just a matter of xy tries... Though I haven't played this particular "Bridge over the Dnestr" level for a while (well, actually the whole IGI 2 game), I guess the final time can certainly be at least 10 s quicker (assumed everything goes OK, of course)... The key is to go through the main compound as quick as possible, wasting no time with killing all those guys inside... As for the guards at the bridge, they aren't that big of a problem - provided you fire that grenade from the right spot, of course.

QUOTE: To jainapurvab:

Well, after literally 1000 additional tries, I've finally managed to beat the level under 6 minutes (see this pic). It's certainly possible to finish it under 5:50 (5:40 at best), but not any quicker.

As for that 2nd grenade blast which I've originally mentioned in my previous posts, well, you don't need it at all! All you have to do is to grab those explosives, get into the bushes near the road, and then fire that "3rd" grenade (as you've mentioned). Really, your tip is EXCELLENT!!! In most of the times, ALL the guards near the machine-gun nests will run away, giving you all the time in the world to run to the bridge without any problems!

As for those 2 guards patrolling the bridge, my personal choice was to kill the RIGHT guy first, since if you do it vice-versa, there's a big possibility that one of those guards near the machine-gun nests will spot you (or will see the killing)...

You've also mentioned that it's better to fire that 3rd grenade when the guy on the LEFT side of the bridge is walking AWAY from you, but to be honest, I didn't care (since I didn't want to lose any precious seconds by waiting)... Even if he hears the blast, it's not that big of a deal (since if you kill the RIGHT guy with your silenced pistol, he'll be alerted anyway)...

Anyway, once again thank you very much for that excellent tip re: the 3rd grenade blast!!! You're a smart boy! :)
Hell, thats an awesome time ! I'm trying to piece together from the jumble of posts between you guys how you did that !

I'm replaying the game from start (in hard mode); i lost all my game saves a while back :D

What i'm also gonna do is copy my game saves afterwards, so if the Ancient Temple level corrupts; i may be able to replace it with uncorrupted files.

I'll post a list of my David Jones times when i'm done !

Also, a colleague of mine is playing it at work during his lunch break (easy mode); he's so impatient; he keeps asking me what to do next ! - i had great fun not telling him about the sentry gun when he opened the back door on the prison level  and on the Villa level; i didnt tell him one of the guards in the last bit had an RPG !

I just done this level in 8:29, 100%, 100%, David Jones rating ! It is tough to do this level, but i think the hardest for me is to get out of the area with the generator; those double doors and the guards outside are a nightmare. You have to walk/run to get past the camera ! But your technique of running out left or right depending on where the guards are worked; they heard me but when i dropped to crawl they just milled about then went inside.

I deviated a few more times from your route; the three guards in the stacked container area i left til i had done the computer terminal; if you do it at optimum timing, the guards are coming towards the mouth as you approach; i ran a bit further on til they heard me (without stepping into their view obviously), then i ran back a bit and went to crawl stance; as the first guard emerged i waited a sec (dont let him get too close otherwise he sees you) then shot him, then shot the second guard as he came out; then i got up and ran and saw the third guard running down to activate the alarm; you can run after him and shoot him in the back - although sometimes it seems to activate the guards in the barracks near the bottom; i have no idea how they can hear you !

It was also funny at one point; i reached the two stationary guards at the bottom, but i didnt switch to crawl mode fast enough; the nearest one turned before i could reach the opening (he'd heard me but didnt see me) - so i had to shoot both; the guard in the shack heard the killings but then also heard me as i got up and ran; this seemed to stop him coming out and setting the alarm. Unfortunately; the guards in the barracks heard my killing of the two guards or heard a stray bullet; whatever, they came out to investigate (as they often do if you're not careful); so i had to walk back and went around the containers in walk/crawl mode; the guards found the dead bodies and ran up between the stacked containers where they found the other guard i shot in the back; i was able to crawl out and round the alarm button as you described; and no-one saw me !

Its really tricky if you dont get a grenade. Fortunately i did (from the crane guy thankfully !); it seems you get a grenade more often if you shoot the sniper guard on the roof rather than neck snap/knife, but i also note the outside guards sometimes hear you if you shoot him in the heard silently, and start running about (including those in the barracks) !

I also found that when you restart the level on the waters edge with the two guards; its much more advantageous to knife those two quickly (right then left), before jumping in the water; that then only leaves you one stray guard to deal with as the others stay in a group by the truck - grenade fodder ! When i emerged from the water; i picked up the sniper rifle from the crane; grenaded all the guards by the truck and used the rifle to take out the last stray guard - if you have two or more stray gaurds, you have to take more time and risk your accuracy; however with the sniper rifle you can position yourself so that only your targetted guard is in view; when you kill him; the others might hear, but crucially they wont see you, you can move out and do the same for the next stray guard, but be quick, as they are homing in on your position - thats why its much better to knife them first quickly then jump in !

Goddamn ! I was on for an optimum Bridge Over The Dnestr ! In the end i got David Jones rank in 7:23, 100% health but only 92% Accuracy - i was in the inner compound near the drums between the two containers, where you have to shoot the camera out then the two nearby guards near the truck - its always touch and go here, because when you nail the first guard, you've got a split second before the second guard notices and starts his mad dash for the alarm button .. i got the camera and the first guard, but before i could aim on the second guard, he started hs run, and its so hard to hit a moving target when its running right across you field of view - i missed him twice before i downed him ! That was the only error - if i'd have had him first time, i would have had 100% accuracy and possibly been a few seconds faster ! BAH !

I've recently got rid of my old CRT monitor and bought a nice little GNR 19" Widescreen LCD monitor. But i get a bizarre effect on IGI2; when i switch to the map view, the blue triangles over the enemy soldiers dont line up ! They also vary in how far away from a particular solider they are, and if i pan across the map, the arrows move differently to the soliders ! Its almost like the arrows are on a layer above the guards and they arent in sync. Just wondering if anyone else gets it ? My screen resolution is 1280 x 768, and no other games/programs seem to have any issues at all.

I've been brooding over a certain question for some time now, and wonder if it makes sense? So I'm asking my fellow IGI fans! :D

Has anyone wondered if the realism of IGI 1 or 2 means anything?
Even the 2003 slogan for Codemasters: "Genius at Play" could imply that the makers of the game are geniuses at play, right? What if those geniuses were playing at telling us gamers something?

 I've wondered if the realism tells us gamers that IGI-style covert warfare EXISTS, right now, present day (or maybe 10-15 years ago since some of the plot lines are dated compared to say, the Splinter Cell series.)

And in the Splinter Cell series, the realism is more stealthy and the plots are higher tech, which might only be a reflection of the increased stakes and complexity of the actual covert wars being fought in real time...

Like IGI team is "soldier of fortune", seat-of-your-pants covert warfare, and Splinter Cell is more like NSA or CIA or similar level of "play"...

The funny thing in the Splinter Cell series is that there are occasional script devices which tease the gamer into questioning whether what is being depicted is just a game or not! (I've got pics!)

And so the basic question is whether the realism in IGI 1 or 2 means anything? (And I realize that as 'real' as the games are, they've got their faults. But we also know that they're decent games for 2000 (IGI) and 2003 (IGI 2) respectively.)

But it's also an incomplete question, because I've thought about IGI's realism compared to say the "realism" in the Soldier of Fortune series, which is much more like a violent, gory cartoon. Or the "realism" of WWII shooters, which are much more about setting a scene, or cinematography...

I could go on... :p ...only if you IGI fans are interested! - BMS

PS

The largest context of the question is the larger universe of other FPS games, like the Splinter Cell series, or Far Cry, or Soldier of Fortune, or even sci-fi type games like Half-Life and/or Doom 3, or Return to Castle Wolfenstein...
Interesting, that reflection in the pool... It somehow reminds me of that bug at the end of the Libyan Rendezvous level (where Jones still holds that G36 rifle in the final cutscene regardless of which weapon you were carrying as your last) - the authors somehow "forgot" about it :)
Btw, have you already found that guy named Krychec B. Aronov, about whom I was talking in one of those posts above (written cca 1/2 year ago?) :)

... when its in IGI2 it seems !

On the Zaleb's Stronghold level, i went wandering all the way back to the first outpost with all the jeeps parked outside and the little 'oasis' within the enclosure - i had blown up the Fuel tank on the flyby, but when i went back, i noticed its reflection in the pool ... the reflection shows it still intact !

Its great having the newer graphics card - the reflections work and i get peoples shadows too (but not objects which can make it a bit weird if you are not on ground level !)

But still I think it's a rather unchallenging level. You know, the trick is to just not waste any time killing those 8 guards - that's all!

To jainapurvab:

When playing the Bridge Across the Dnestr level, I've noticed one funny thing. If you go near the bridge and then crawl directly across the road, the nearest of those 7 guys will (of course) notice you, but he will not shoot at you. Instead, he will run behind the nearby machine-gun, where he will just fire a single shot somewhere towards the other side of the river, and then return to his original guarding position as if nothing had happened :) Funny, isn't it?

Btw, did you notice that the guard walking on that ledge in the warehouse doesn't react to your shots at all? Even if you fire from M16A2 rifle, he just stays unalerted. He will just stare towards your direction and then continue walking as if nothing had happened! I always laugh on his disinterested screams when I'm killing the outside guards - they're getting mad when they see their buddy's corpse, but this guy simply doesn't bother at all...

I don't fully agree with you as long as this Ambush mission is concerned. Yes there is a little bit of graphic error for those trucks on road and of caurse that bush bug.

But this mission has something.I was not able to accept my blast number 3 or 2 ,whatever it is, of previous mission because of my obsession of carrying sniper in next mission.
now i am able to pass mission below 2:00 without sniper. So it gives relief in previous mission.

I set 1:56 min. as a theoretical limit for this mission.
my data is 2:00, 0 spot, 100% , 100%.
soon i will post walkthrough in serial manner in this thread.

To jainapurvab:

QUOTE: Also i need more insight in blast 2. Do guards standing below the camera outside of garage move? if yes then how much long it takes to complete objective 1 after the blast 2.

You probably misunderstood me... I tried this 2nd grenade shot when I was already LEAVING the base (so those 2 guys under the camera which you've mentioned were already BOTH DEAD)...

Anyway, as far as I remember, when I fired this 2nd grenade, 3 guys from below went to investigate, whereas the remaining 4 stayed near the machine-gun nests (one of them patrolling). I haven't tried that 3rd blast (which you've mentioned) yet, but it sounds very interesting! If those remaining 4 guards can leave their original positions at least for cca those 8-10 seconds, then you can easily gain even half a minute! I'll have a try soon!

Btw, when speaking about those bugs, there's one which you can use to great effect in the whole game, but it comes pretty handy in this particular level. I mean, if you hide yourself inside those bushes (as peblair mentioned), the enemies won't see you at all - even when shooting from M16A2 rifle! What an ugly bug! And that's not all! Many times, I've also encountered some "blind" enemies. For example, if you go near those snipers in the Production Facility level (I mean those who guard the base) using the CRAWL mode, they won't notice you at all! You can easily get behind their back and stab them / twist their neck without any problems!

QUOTE: Anyways, This mission have a bug. I say bug because when one kills the machine gun guy facing towards bridge even with knife while creeping(it is possible to do for just a research), group of guards start petroling like a dad's garden and when one do big blast(on Remote side) ,they remain calm.
So there is no way that one can kill them.

Exactly! I just can't understand how on earth can those guys hear/see the killing, when they're on the other side of the bridge?! Do they have some walkie-talkies or what? :)

The same for that guy patrolling the LEFT side of the bridge. You know, I haven't tried it yet, but I can confirm you that I've experienced this bug literally million times! For example, once when I was playing the very first level and killed the guard behind the warehouse doors with the silenced pistol, the bullet also alerted the guards in the nearby barracks... Stupid!

QUOTE: Recently, I've also tried to do the level a bit differently... That is, once I've drawn those 4 guards in the parking lot away (as jainapurvab said), I DIDN'T toss the M16A2 rifle yet. Instead, I've carried it all the way through the base, and once I've opened the rear gate, I just fired one additional grenade to the area on the left, and only THEN tossed the weapon. The guards near the machine-gun nests of course heard the blast and went to investigate, but unfortunately, those who were behind the machine-guns still remained there... This in itself wouldn't be a problem, since if you kill the guard positioned nearest the road silently, you can run towards the bridge without any problems, but unfortunately, once you kill him (actually, once you kill ANY of those 7 guards located by the machine-gun nests), one of the 2 groups of soldiers located on the other side of the bridge will (for some strange reason) hear it and go to investigate...

Also, this whole level has one small dilemma, which can greatly affect your final achieved time. I mean, in the next level (Ambush), you'll carry the same weapons which you had at the end of this mission, so you'll have to make a decision which weapon to carry and which not... Of course, the best solution is to grab that Dragunov from near the truck, but because of this, you'll have to carry this weapon all the way till the end of the mission - and this of course has a very negative effect on your final achieved time... On the other hand, if you decide to finish the level WITHOUT any primary weapon, your final achieved time will be that much quicker...

Anyway, I believe that (if everything goes OK), it's indeed possible to beat the level under 6:30 minutes... It's definitely one of the tougher missions - last but not least because of the fact that the visibility in the whole area is on a VERY high level... Gotta have another try! :)

When i wrote this walkthrough, i was in confusion about which gun to carry.
If you carry M-16 or go with out any primary , your next level will be on doom.On other hand if you go for sniper, tension of Time increases on this mission. In the hand I went for later part.

Anyways, This mission have a bug. I say bug because when one kills the machine gun guy facing towards bridge even with knife while creeping(it is possible to do for just a research), group of guards start petroling like a dad's garden and when one do big blast(on Remote side) ,they remain calm.
So there is no way that one can kill them.

But i have an idea.May be a bit worthy.Just for an experiment(if you dont want sniper which is a big lose or someone finds a way to pass next mission without sniper in rank 1), carry M16 with you.You have to do 3 blasts.

Blast one as i have mentioned for those 4 guys.
Blast two as you(skorecel) mentioned where garage is located.
Blast three from behing the truck to chopper side(where Quest arrives in next mission) ,hiding in bushes, after picking Remote control.

What happens in blast 3?
In blast number 2, Something 3 guys moves towards garage. Two guys of an interest remains there. This guys can not be hurt as they are nested by program bug.So after blast 3 , this two guards move behind from their original position for say 8-10 seconds towards chopper side. Here your position is just behing the tree in the bush(last bush from road side) So one can use this time moving inside LEFT of bridge.

One more thing. Blast 3 timing is important.Blast only when LEFT guard on the bridge is moving away from jones. Also use knife to kill him because either it an another program bug that alerts the group on other side when he is killed(if yes then whole idea of blast 3 falls) or bullets fly over to them as LEFT is killed.I did not recollect but one can prove this by creeping over the frame of bridge from right to left side(An experiment) and falling direclty over to left side to kill LEFT guy to conclude the reason. I will try though in future.

Also i need more insight in blast 2. Do guards standing below the camera outside of garage move? if yes then how much long it takes to complete objective 1 after the blast 2.

Also one will be very glad if someone clears next mission without sniper(in record time , less than 2:30 min)
